So She Wants to Write a Fugue
This is the second movement of Grazyna Bacewicz’s (1909-1969) beautiful, fiery, and fiercely Polish Second Sonata. At the midpoint of the movement, a fugue emerges and inexorably builds to a tragic peak.
Reminiscent of the slow movements of some of Prokofiev’s War Sonatas, and at times almost of jazz, Bacewicz’s music has an idiosyncratic style and harmonic language that is all her own.
The fugue, from Lera Auerbach’s (1973-) Chorale, Fugue, and Postlude.
Not a fugue (tricked ya!) but the encore I performed after the Fugue program (all extracts taken from a recording made of a concert I performed in Richmond, VA on May 12, 2023 as the finale of Belvedere’s inaugural season. Melodie, op. 5, no. 6 (3)
